“I need to learn from my mistakes, or I’ll dig my own grave” – New Found Glory

So this is it for me. High school is over, adulthood is on the horizon. Everything I have done so far in life has gotten me here, and now it’s over. A chapter of my life is over. In fact, it’s more than a chapter. Part One in a trilogy is over. The fellowship has failed. I must now press on to Mount Doom alone, and without a gardener to help me. Perhaps I’ll find a Gollum to lead me on my way and keep me on my toes. Perhaps I’ll make the trek into Mordor entirely alone. In either case, it’s time.

Many of us, when we reach the stage of transition into adulthood, have some changes we feel we need to make. We know what we need to do in order to make ourselves better, and what better time than now. Only some succeed though. It has been a recent discovery of mine that maturity, as far as mental and emotional development is concerned, ends early in high school if not beforehand. The only thing that can force people to be different from this point on is struggle, and that struggle is not life getting more difficult. Life has the same amount of challenges now as it did in school and as many as it will have in the future. The only difference is the consequences for failing to rise to the occasion. Those who failed in high school felt little recompense, but now will feel the full sting of their payment. I plan to avoid that.

As humorous as it may sound, Wikipedia helped me figure out that I needed to make a change. I somehow stumbled onto a few articles concerning internet addiction and procrastination, and realized just how many of the “symptoms” apply directly to me. I have been lazy and impulsive to a very large degree, and the procrastination article spelled out exactly how I do it. This troubled me, in this time where if I am going to make a difference in life, I need to start now.

Seeing everything spelled out though has helped me to see exactly what I need to do to change. I plan to do it. I plan to break all of my negative habits and build upon my talents, which have been buried for far too long. I hope to do what many cannot, and make these critical changes. I see so many people on the street now being irresponsible and it finally makes sense…I can see what they were like in high school. I can see how many of my peers’ lives are going to progress from here. I can see so many things that I thought kids grew out of that they don’t…that adults do and make up excuses for. There is no great change that comes of hitting a magical age or suddenly living a different life. There is no maturing…at least unforced maturing. I don’t want to do that. I won’t do that.

I will write. I will practice. I will exercise. I will set goals. I will follow my interests. I will make a difference NOW, not later. I will read again. I will not waste time. I will not surf endlessly. I will not keep a bad sleep cycle. I will not keep bad habits.

This has been another terrible installment of random, jumbled thoughts written down not for the benefit of readers and not in an anywhere near acceptable fashion, but because I felt compulsed to write what I was thinking and straighten things out. Quality and professionalism must be sacrificed for the sake of introspection. If I were only going to be professional I would make a secondary blog for that purpose. Somehow, I still don’t think it would be very good though.

Quick update folks. I’ve got some good posts churning, but I thought I’d leave you this little kiss to hold you over. I really apologize for the sub-par posting lately. The deep thoughts will return.

Anyways…

Randall Munroe of XKCD has done it again, this time with his most controversial post ever. You’d be surprised how easily people get up in arms over fruit.

There are the banana shippers, the Kiwis who insist they’re called rock-melons, not cantaloupe, and those poor travesties who actually think grapefruit can be tasty. According to his blog (err…blag), it only took about 800 seconds after the comic was posted for his inbox to flood with angry messages from people who think watermelon is not overrated or that he’s an idiot for forgetting starfruit. This is an incredibly large internet phenomenon. Who knew how defensive we humans are about our fruit prefrences?

Where the heck is honeydew? That’s what I want to know.

Stop and think about this for a minute though. People are up in arms over this thing. The site has an incredible number of hits, comments, and links (including the ones here) stemming all from this one simple graph. Another blogger pointed this out and drew people’s attention to his criticism of the previous Monday’s comic, being unhappy with the sexism. Well, in reality he was being nitpicky about the antagonist not having a hat and the wording of the title, but still.

What does this show about the world today? We care more about fruit than we do about treating others fairly. We care more about voting for American Idol than we do for the next President. We’d rather write songs about how terrible the world is today than get active in the community. We’d rather check MySpace than help our little brothers with their spelling homework. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

What would the world be like if we just stopped for a moment, and thought about what was really important in the grand scheme of things? Think about how many hours we waste on things that don’t really matter, but that somehow end up high on our priority lists. In fact, make a list of the things that are important to you. The things that really matter. No, I don’t mean trying to prove to your friends that “Jump” is the best Van Halen song. I don’t mean five-starring “Run To The Hills” on expert. I mean the things that really matter.

Finished?

Look at that list, and then think about what you’ve been doing recently. Does it coincide with that list? If things seem a little out of whack, then you’re right. They are. I won’t lie, I’ve got a lot of rearranging to do myself. I challenge each and every one of you to do something more valuable with your time today. Take those three hours you watch TV each night and go to bed early, so you can get up early to work on that book you’ve been wanting to write. Pause in the middle of your game, and go make your sister’s bed. Do something to make someone smile, and then do something that will help get you closer to your life goals. After all, you only get one shot at this life.

In fifty year’s time, are you going to be able to look back on your life and say you’ve reached your fullest potential? For most of us, the answer right now is probably not in the affirmative. We can change that though.

I want to be able to look back and honestly be able to say I’ve lived a full life. How about you?

EDIT: Don’t forget a good start to the next as well

Okay so I lied. The good post didn’t come on Monday. It didn’t come on Tuesday either. You poor saps had to wait until Wednesday night for something half decent. I also apologize for the last few posts being weak in quality as well as quantity. I’ve been swamped, but I’ve got a few ideas in the works. Lo siento?

…man, my Spanish really is tanking fast.

Anyways…

So apparently social networks like MySpace and Facebook are on the decline. Is this an early sign of the end of social networks? What does this mean for the global community, and the global economy? Social networks changed the world. Will their recession change it even more?

The first thing that might happen is that the popularity of the networks levels out. MySpace will still have a lot of visitors, just not as many as it has now. The novelty of the sites will wear off, and they will reach an equilibrium. This is what we should be hoping for, if we want to retain our sanity and our pocketbooks.

On the other hand, social networks could flop completely. People are getting bored with the networks. They are, after all, little more than an extension of daily conversation for most people, something AIM can more than take care of. In addition, as people age they are less and less tolerant of the stupid two word bulletins, the obnoxious profiles, and the overwhelming number of middle schoolers. The cool factor is wearing off. It might not be long before it’s just another minor detail on the massive canvas that is the internet. Or they could all just go the way of Friendster.

I wonder what the implications would be? Your guess is as good as mine. I’d elaborate, but I’ve got some Chinese fire lizard wranglin’ to do.
